Upper grades
By Nancy

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach in a 5th grade classroom, after recently finishing my Master's Degree with license in Middle Child Ed. (4-9 grades). I originally thought I wanted to go into Secondary Ed., but after subbing in a 6th grade classroom,
I knew where I belonged. Here are my likes and dislikes about middle schoolers (from my experience):

They are just beginning to realize that members of the opposite sex are interesting...you need to keep romances in check.

They get my sense of humour, and we can laugh together during the day.

They are growing up skill wise, and some of the things they do in art and in creative

writing are phenomenal! It's a joy to watch it blossom.

They can talk back, be sarcastic, be mean to one another, and can also be very sneaky and crafty.

Still are young enough to like school, and think their teacher is "cool" (or at least bearable), but are growing up in many ways.

Can go to the bathroom by themselves, but can also wreak havoc in the bathroom by themselves.

Physical appearances is a HUGE issue. These kids are changing physically, and it's very stressful for them. Their peers can either makes their lives wonderful or miserable (and it can change from day to day).

I absolutely love teaching 5th grade. I enjoy how my classroom feels like a "community" even though it has its hiccups along the way. If you can get your middle graders to respect themselves, one another, and you...you'll have a great time.
