i don't know what to tell you about the faculty room--our parents are allowed in there to sit on the couch to work and spread stuff out on the tables...

but to get the mother to stop babying her child, i would focus on the needs of the child--s/he is at an age when we need to start "cutting the apron/purse...whatever strings". s/he needs to learn how to go about her daily business on her own.

i have a potential student next year who i will have to do this same sort of thing with--the mother is very sensitive and the child (a boy) will be a 6th grader--i'll make a point to explain how it will be ostracizing to the child--other parents don't do this--it makes him stand out--and not in a good way.

good luck
