Taking a leave
By Anne M.

Clip to ScrapBook
My baby is due at the beginning of June so I have had to struggle with the same problem. I will have to leave my current class with a sub for the last three weeks of the school year. Then I will take the remaining maternity
leave in the fall. I struggled with this at first, but decided that the baby needs my time more than my older students. I may actually take an extended leave all the way until the new year. I have taken over classes in the middle of the year before and the kids have always adjusted well within a week or two (and that was special ed!) I like the idea of visiting the class a couple
of times before returning. That way the kids understand the reason you are not there, get to know a little about you and anticipate your arrival. They will also recognize that you will be coming with high expectations for their learning. Why not try cooresponding with your class pen pal style until you return? Then they can tell you all about themselves and what they are learning. You'll be that much farther ahead in establishing a relationship with them when you get back. (I'll bet they would love baby pictures, too!)

Baby first!
