    Reading incentives

First graders are so proud when they are learning to read. I tell my kids that when they can read a book fluently, they can test it out on me and then read it aloud to the class. They're eager to show off their reading skills, and everyone wants a chance to do it. (Of course, you'd have to do a lesson on fluency and model what you mean by it.) When a student has done 5 or 10 read-alouds, they get to read a book to the principal or vice-principal.

If it's volume you're looking for rather than fluency, you can give certificates to kids every time they read 10 or 15 or 20 books at home (title/author recorded by student, each entry initialed by parents). The problem I found with this is that they read a lot of Pokemon or Scooby Doo or Disney books, which drives me bananas; for this reason I might consider making up a long list of recommended books for my first graders and stipulate that at least half the books on their list for each certificate need to be from that list. (I can probably phrase it in a non-snobby way.)

What I'd like to find is a way to reward kids for reading instead of watching t.v. Any ideas for that?
