There is the right job for you!

I had an unpleasant experience as a long term sub.I subbed the last ten weeks of school after a teacher left.Of course the students missed their first teacher and then there was the usual end of the year attitudes plus state
testing. WOW! I knew it would be difficult but not that difficult.I have worked in a private parochial school and I am currently job hunting. So I can relate to your feelings and concerns.
So let me say there is not that much difference between private and public except for the pay scale. You will find well run private and well run public schools as well as private and public schools
with many problems. It all depends on the school. So my advice is to carefully check a school out before you accept a position. Some people would take a position to get a foot in the door and later change if there is a problem but with your concerns and bad experience I would do a careful check first. If you are going to an interview at a private school I would ask about the number of students in each class. Also ask about special services. Do they have remedial programs, guidance counselors etc.? Some private schools can not afford services so students with issues are left solely to the teacher to handle. Some public schools too! See if you can make your interview during school hours so you can get a sense of the school and how smoothly it runs. If they ask you back for a second interview or offer you a position ask to come and observe a classroom before school is out. This should give you a good idea of the school's atmosphere. You can talk to students and faculty. Then you can decide whether to accept the position. I would do all this for a public school too. A job fair will not present the opportunity to observe the school, students and faculty directly but you can do all this at a second interview hopefully at the school.Of course be pleasant and ethusiastic. You are really interested in their school and are very interested in seeing it when school is in session. You want to see all the good things that are happening there. Most people love to show off their school. So I see no reason you won't be able to go and check the school out. After all they will check you out so why shouldn't you check them out. Also look at their web sites. Web sites are places with good PR about the school. There will be awards and special programs the school has participated in on a web site.Sometimes you can go to specific grade sites and see what certain teachers and students are doing in their classroom. This will also give you an idea of what the school is like. These are a few suggestions. I hope they are helpful to you. There is a position that is right for you. Don't give up. It's there. Good luck.
