Catdog
By Sue W.

Clip to ScrapBook
Yes, Catdog is a compound word. But it has to have a capital! It fits the definition, two known words, no space between. As TV cartoon character/characters the word is a name, not a standard , found in the dictionary, type of word. I would just explain that briefly. You may have students in the class with compound word first or last names, i.e, Joellen Benson.
This could lead to a discussion of language. QWIK and LITE aren't proper spellings but kids see them and many others word daily in advertizing, etc. The student mentioning obviously knows what makes a compound word, and you would have to be the one to figure out if it is intended to get a rise out of you.
