Moving West
By Julianne

Clip to ScrapBook
You might want to read "Gila Monsters Meet You at the Airport" by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat. It is a book that was featured on Reading Rainbow some years back. One boy is moving to the desert "way out west", another is moving to the big city. They meet at the airport and have a discussion about what the one boy can expect to find when he gets west. Your class could listen to the story, then discuss what they already know about the desert. Use a K W L chart (what they know, what they want to learn, then what they actually learned) to organize the information and guide your lesson preparation. I've used this kind of introduction with first graders and it was fun seeing what they really wanted to know about things.
