    I think this is such a common issue in 5th grade. At the beginning of the year, I thought it was just me, but I've since heard it was very normal. I solved it by explaining to them that they are making a choice - to talk now or talk at lunch. I give them one warning (verbally) when they blurt out or talk to a neighbor. After that, they get lunch detention. That means they sit at a table by themselves and can't talk during lunch. That is a huge social time for them, so it's a huge incentive for mine. It's working for my group. They also know (and I remind them) that if they stay quiet during lessons that they'll have time to work on homework at the end. Otherwise, anything we don't finish during the day is finished for homework. This works when I can't pinpoint who is doing all the talking (if it's a lot of them). Trust me - their classmates will put their fingers on their lips and glare at them if they continue talking when I stop teaching!
