Major Cuts here too--kinda long, but advice at end
By Kasi

Clip to ScrapBook
I'm still in college, but the future of getting a job here in Alabama is not looking good either. I, too, live in a small rural area. We do not have any city schools in our county...just a very POOR county school system.
Most of our teachers are paid for by state funding, and the state is cutting education by 18% (I think). We are losing 56 teaching units and all aides (except special ed. ones required by law). My best friend is one of three non-tenured teachers at her school, and they are losing three units--not looking good for her at all. They are also talking about cutting all sports and consolidating
some schools. Our local board cannot really be blamed...they don't have much income aside from state and federal funding (taxes, industries, etc.).

If you are from Tennesse, though, have you thought about going to Georgia. They ALWAYS need teachers. My friend, who is more than likely going to get cut, just went to a job fair in Atlanta today. I think they hired 20,000 or so new teachers last year (that's what I read on a website anyway).

Good luck!
