Houghton Mifflin By Amanda K.

My district went through this process 2 years ago. We eventually chose Houghton Mifflin, and I've been very pleased with it (I teach first grade.) I like the series because it follows a logical progression as far as developmental| ability goes. It is colorful, and the students like to look at at. There are great supplemental components (any first grade teacher would love the Math Centers kit that comes as an add-on ... we got ours as part of the package). I especially like it because it provides an adequate number of practice problems with each lesson. There is also quite a bit of review of previous | | lessons, although not as much as the ABeka series (which is Christian and can't be used in public schools... too bad, because I think that's the best out there.) We actually did not choose the Scott Foresman book because of the review issue. Also, the kids are taught to think on a higher level, as there are lots of these kinds of problems. My kids are very comfortable with word problems now because of this book. There are plenty of assessment tools, Reteach Masters, Practice Masters, Challenge Masters, an ESL component, and all kinds of other tools for differentiating instruction. Really, this series has just about everything you could ask for.
