Sorry these books/authors are a bit dated, but I live far away from the States and can't order as many books as I'd love to...
Anyway, John Irving is always a favorite ( especially 'Prayer for Owen Meany'), I love Zora Neale Hurston (Their eyes were watching God; Dust tracks on the road') and Tom Robbins: start with Even cowgirls get the blues and read them all - the latest is 'Fierce invalids home from hot climates' - I just love this guy!
My favorite mystery writers: Tony Hillerman, Ed McBain and Stuart Kaminsky
I could go on and on - I love reading
