I think I would have handled it the way you did. If it had happened earlier in the day then I would have sent her to the office to allow the Dean to deal with it. I would have perhaps mentioned it to the Dean before leaving for the day saying that you noticed it at the end of the day and felt that it was better left until the next day when more time was available and her regular teacher was back. This way if the Dean wanted to call the parents to have the words blacked out before she returned to school he would have had that option.
