Pen pals
By Barb

Clip to ScrapBook
I don't know of any resources for establishing safe pen pals routines but I can share what I have done this year.

I have 20 kindergarteners and we are penpals with a class from California. About once a month we exchange
"letters". The letters started off pretty simple...Hi ______! From _______ (with an illustration included.) The letters are a little more detailed now. We also have exchanged traveling buddies which has been a lot of fun. We have Sammy the Shark visiting and Sammy gets to go home for an overnight with each child. The kids write in Sammy's journal all about his adventures at their
home. We read the journal entries in class. Sammy has one more child to visit then he will be heading back to California.

You can go to teachers.net and find the pen pal board. You can post a request for a pen pal class. Also the Tchers.RUs Newsletter has a pen pal program too. I can forward the newsletter to you if you are interested in that. You contact the person in charge and she will match you up with a pen pal class if there is a class still looking for pen pals.

Hope this helps!
