Quieting a class
By Bren

Clip to ScrapBook
At the high school level: If it's a day to day position I usually let them know class will begin in X minutes and at that time everyone should be seated quietly so that I can give further instructions. I also make note if
the noise level is beyond acceptable. They usually settle pretty well after a couple minutes of unwinding.

If the class is really out of control, I would consider writing a note on the board as the chaos ensues, stating the consequences of not sitting quietly by a certain time. I think I've only ever done this once.

If I do yell to get their attention, I follow it with directions in

a much quieter tone. This way I've not only gotten their attention, but they have to focus to hear what I'm saying. It may need repeated, but after the first time or two the, "Shhh, be quiet, Johnny! The teacher's trying to say something!" starts to circle around the room.

I live for quieting an elementary level class. There are just too many fun things to do to get their attention.
