centers

Clip to ScrapBook
I, too, teach kindergarten, half day sessions. I use center time at the beginning of the day. Children complete responsibilities (checking backpacks, checking out classroom library books etc..) then go to centers. I control
what centers are open and what happens at them. I always have writing station and reading station open (sorry I call them stations instead of centers I have no idea why). I average 8 stations open daily at this time of year and I'm always adding new ones. Just today I opened Letter Shop. It consists of three two sided plastic totes. Each tote has a letter taped to the bottom of
each section. Children "shop" for items in the room that start with that letter and place them in the tote. They loved it and worked together to fill and then empty their baskets. Interestly enough, the ones that struggle with sound recognition paired up with stronger learners and so learned from them.

Centers can teach so much! I also use them after snack time and when children finish an activity early.
