ink analysis By Sarah

|
I have done ink analysis (chromatography) with grades 4-7 before; my grade 4/5's did it a few weeks ago and enjoyed it! It is really very simple to do.Black pens and markers look black but if you separate the ink then | you can see each pen is unique. So we set up a crime scene (which I can describe if you are interested), and basically each class member was a "suspect" apprehended at the scene and had to write their alibi with a black marker. We then did chromatography to compare their inks to the "crime note" left at the scene. So one student is the "criminal". You need: - black marker for | | each child (I put tape with a number on each) - piece of filter paper (from coffee filters) - mixture of 70% rubbing alcohol and vinegar (I use 7:1 alcohol to vinegar)Hmmm, rather than typing out all the instrucions, go here: http://student.biology.arizona.edu/sciconn/crime/teacher_crime.html Any questions, just let me know. It only takes about 30 minutes; it's dramatic to see; it's fun and everyone can do it!
