It is probably too late but I just read your post today (March 4). I taught gr 8 Science last year and yes some of the expectations were challenging (especially if they haven't covered equations or geometry in math, then
you end up teaching them math).

I had them design a fun house too; unfortunately my stuff is all packed away as I am now teaching grade 5, but I will recall for you what I can:

- this was done on 8.5 X 11" paper
- they had to put in 10 (I think??) arcade machines, dimensions about 3 cm X 3 cm; no machines could touch
- they had to put in a doorway and a cashier's desk
- all

machines had to be visible to a cashier facing forward (in other words, they had to decide WHAT kind of mirrors to use and WHERE to put the mirrors)
- to get a Level 4, they had to use the MINIMUM number of mirrors
- they could decorate and label their arcade machines
- adapt this as you see fit

Also, if you have computer access, here's a neat website for optical illusions (we also did a project on colour blindness):

Good luck!
