centers
By Susan S.

Clip to ScrapBook
My first thought is to use centers for this time. I've done that with my 5th graders when my gifted kids were out (I have 7 of them), and it works wonderfully! I have them rotate every 30 minutes, in groups of 3-4. They
do things that reinforce what we're studying, such as:
1. spelling words - stamp them out using alphabet stamps
2. art - make something that goes along with social studies (tea paper with a letter from a soldier)
3. computers - various educational software
4. games - various educational games (Scrabble, Chess, Who wants to be a millionaire).
5. Reading corner - choose
books to go along with your studies or let them free read.
6. writing - send postcards to various states, or write thank you cards around holidays, letters to relatives, etc...
7. tutoring - either I tutor or I let them peer tutor each other on subjects they're having trouble in (give a copy of an old test and let them see what they did wrong - especially math - then give examples of similar problems to work).

They really look forward to these times.
