talking
By nancy

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach first grade and at times they just don't stop talking. I used to yell, but they got used to that. Now I either do one or two things. First, if you need their attention, shut the lights off and ask everybody to give themselves a big hug and be quiet. Practice this several times. They not only listen, but soon they'll do it if they even see you REACH for the light switch. Second, sometimes I just stand there and do nothing but cross my arms and stare. It may take a couple of minutes but eventually they get the point that they need to stop talking and listen. Of course, a class can't be quiet for every minute of the school day. Valuable learning and social skills are also taking place. It's hard to remember that.
