Hi Karen,
Call all the parents to a meeting after school, like I did last week. Tell them their support is VITAL to their child's success and that they must model good reading habits to foster a love of reading and therefore
learning.

My meeting went well. My parents of my Grade 1's are keen to assist, even in the classroom. BUT- and here it is............. YOU! MUST show them how to read and teach the parents strategies eg. predicting the text, same as guided reading etc. Most of my children in my class are the eldest in the family so the parents are youngish, my age (!!) and they really needed

demonstrations and simple ideas to help their children read books and sight words.

I hate to think that if parents are not keen to read with their child and be involved in their homework, what will their attitudes be like when the child is in Year 6 or so??!!

So, call a meeting and demonstrate etc. Remember, parents may not have much clue with strategies. Have a Home Reading Diary and in that, they record the nightly readers, and a simple, short written comment for each book and a parent signature.
Hope I've helped you,
Suzie
