ideas for defiant and distracted

Your posting struck a note with me! I am in my first year of teaching and had three boys exactly like the one you speak of. I tried everything too. All three of them sat near me. That did help a bit, but still they were
very, very disruptive. Finally, I figured, hey maybe they are adhd. So I talked to the parents, and sure anough, he had been tested, but was in the grey area and so no one thought it necessary for any further assessment. Finally, after4 harrowing months with this one child, the parents finally had him re-diagnosed and is now getting chemical support. He is a competely different child.
He is focused, can listen, and actually does his assignments. The other two moved. I hate to say this, but thank god they did. One of them was such an enigma--so very smart, but needy, so needy. His mother died in a firey blaze along with his 2 younger siblings at the tender age of 5. Have compassion for these children. Ask their angels of love to surround them. I did this in utter desperation one Sunday evening before having to return to school. You know what? It really worked. Also look into Love and Logic-you can find it easily on the internet. It is a wonderful discipline program focused on giving the "problem" back to the child. I have also found that by consistently insisting that the child finish their work by having them stay inside during recesses to finish up is a very strong motivator. Take them to another classroom so that you and they can have a "time-out". We do this at our school and is really can be a lifesaver. Anyway, I don't know if this helps, but I would be glad to chat with you more about it. Good luch. Zora
