In addition to drawing a picture, the students could cut a photo out of a magazine, glue it in their journals then write about it.
Lower level- a few words or a complete sentence
Middle level- two or three sentences.
Higher- a paragraph and so on.
For my students, writing is a real chore but I have them journal every day. On Fridays it is "free write"- topic of their choice. They really like that!
