I would have to look up the author's name. This is a wonderful book, circa the early 1900's in Nebraska. The kids loved it in my fifth grade class. It has a readability level of about 4th grade. It is about an orphan girl who leaves New York City to live with a family in Nebraska who adopts her. The conflict is: Will the family ever come to truly love her as a daughter? Or will they always think of her as a household servant? (They actually adopted her so that she could do work around the house.) It is also not a long book. I think it goes for somewhere around a hundred pages. There is a lot of background on this section of the country, which will enhance the students' learning about that part of the country.
