Regrouping Idea
By Lydia Gold

Clip to ScrapBook
I am a student teacher too, but my cooperating teacher just did a lesson that was wonderful. First, he carefully explained that the kids must add the ones column before the tens column. Then he modeled how to do a problem several times, but he used 5 blocks. There were two blocks for the bottom number of the sum and two blocks for a large number of the second number of the sum. Above the tens column he had a small block in which students were two place any numbers carried.
I can't do blocks, but it looked something like this:
_

___ ___
+
___ ____ The small box helped the studetns to remember to carry.
