math manips
By JJ

Clip to ScrapBook
It's great if the kids are able to solve problems using the manipulatives. But then, make them record their thinking. I give my first graders lots of story problems to solve, but they have to show how they solved it. They start by using the manips, but then are able to move onto just drawing, or using tallies or using the number line or hundreds chart. Show your kids that there are lots of ways to solve problems and they will solve them in a variety of ways. Math manipulatives are great because it allows the kids to really understand the math instead of just memorizing facts. Allow them to use them!
