A close friend of mine works with the Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps out of Bergen County, NJ. He summed it up this way: "You have four choices in your life: you're either your father, or you're not your father, or you're either your mother, or you're not your mother." And that's about it.

Parents stick up for kids using the same defenses and excuses that you see the kids giving you. Hence the never-ending cycle of stupidity I often encounter in the classroom.
