parents

Hi,

I understand what you are saying, Jay and I think most of us can relate. I think the essence is that parents have little respect for educators and have been getting their advice from the media. They are learning
to critique us very well, but have no clue that our focus needs to be an entire class of children and not just their own darling. Schools are just a symptom of the ills our society is experiencing. Lack of good manners, good values and morals are missing from many homes. Many parents want their children to be happy above all else and the idea of learning to experience consequences that
may hurt is unacceptable.

So what do we do? Do what you can in the classroom and expect VERY little from parents. If you get supportive and helpful parents, that's great and their children will excel. I am finished with homework expectations in the early grades and I am also hesitant to bring up problems unless they are big. Parents SAY they want to be told about any issues, but then when we do bring up problems, we sometimes end up as the "mean old teacher" who is squelching their darling's spirit, they blame the other children, etc. Oh, please!

Can you tell I am frustrated with the same issues?
Connie
