Here are two ideas that work for me:

1) Take a toothpick & poke many holes into an apple. Let the apple sit for several days and watch the "cavities" develop.

2) Drop hard boiled eggs into vinegar (I tint it green for a better visual). Let them soak for a day or two. Explain to your students that the vinegar effects the eggshell in a similar manner that plaque effects our teeth. Be sure to explain that the vinegar works MUCH faster than plaque.
