It's all relative
By Robyn

Clip to ScrapBook
I really do think it's all relative...salaries and price of living. First of all, let me tell you that I live in my parents' house, side apartment. I am 29 years old and saving for my first house. Houses in my County (Fairfield
County aka The Gold Coast) run on an average of $500,000 to $600,000 so when people say that they are building their house, I don't blame them one bit b/c if you're going to pay so much money for an old house, then why not pay the same to build on a lot and get EXACTLY what you wanted in a house. Yes, I will probably have to commute from wherever I find a reasonable house, I'm
looking for a house around 300K but right now, I'm fine with the apartment and love my car which I bought used but is still a 97 VW Cabrio. I do not have my credit cards maxed out, actually I pay them out every month. No, my parents did not go out and buy a new house or car when they first got married, they were like 20 years old and didn't make that kind of money. So, I say, you should save some definetly for retirement but you should also live and buy what you'd like for today. I love my life, love my career without a doubt, I try to balance my spending and saving, and am a new teacher. So I don't think most or all new teachers are doing the things you mentioned. If they are, remember if they're married, then together they have a great combined income.....around here, the average combined income and this is on a low average, is 100K, 50 for each. So, think about how much you spent on your house, your car, your living, then you understand your salary....our salary even tho' alot on this board, is NOT alot to survive here....which is why I know many teachers who tutor or have a second job....if they're not married.

Sorry, it's long but had to explain my side...nothing against your side, it's just a different side is all.
