Science tie-in
By Gigi

Clip to ScrapBook
I'm guessing you're teaching K or 1? If it's K, these might not apply or might need adaptation.

How about a hands-on science tie-in: How fast do NON-magic beans grow? Do the good old sprouting-lima-beans-in-a-bag activity
and have the kids draw pictures of the daily changes. To tie it back in with the literature, they can then use their drawings as the basis for writing/illustrating their own version of the fairytale.

A more literature-based idea: Find different versions of the tale. The only one that comes to mind right now is "Jenny and the Beanstalk," which has other twists besides the protagonist's

different gender. Certainly there must be other versions, perhaps even from different cultures. Each small group can compare their version with the one you read to the class.

You can also use the tale as a demonstration of the standard structure of fairy tales, and each group can come up with a fairy tale of their own.

Surely there are other, more creative ideas -- I know these aren't terribly creative.
