Something I've used a lot is the Teacher Created Materials books that go along with different novels. They've been a huge help for me. They have vocabulary (and ideas on teaching it), different activities, quizzes every| few chapters, etc... The way I usually teach is to have the kids write a summary in their notebooks about what they read the day before. It helps them see how they comprehended. Then they write a prediction about what's going to happen next (helps them keep some things in mind, again to help with comprehension). Then we read as a class, stopping occasionally to let students read (volunteers | | only) and to point out the vocabulary words, different scenes, etc... They write down the voc. words before we read those chapters, look them up in the dictionary, and keep a notebook with them in it. Every few days, we have a game with them at the end of class. I divide the class into 2 teams - usually boys vs. girls. One of each goes to the front of the room and we play it similar to "Password" where their team gives them a one-word clue to try to guess the word. They love it!
