novels
By Susan S.

Clip to ScrapBook
Something I've used a lot is the Teacher Created Materials books that go along with different novels. They've been a huge help for me. They have vocabulary (and ideas on teaching it), different activities, quizzes every
few chapters, etc... The way I usually teach is to have the kids write a summary in their notebooks about what they read the day before. It helps them see how they comprehended. Then they write a prediction about what's going to happen next (helps them keep some things in mind, again to help with comprehension). Then we read as a class, stopping occasionally to let students read (volunteers
only) and to point out the vocabulary words, different scenes, etc... They write down the voc. words before we read those chapters, look them up in the dictionary, and keep a notebook with them in it. Every few days, we have a game with them at the end of class. I divide the class into 2 teams - usually boys vs. girls. One of each goes to the front of the room and we play it similar to "Password" where their team gives them a one-word clue to try to guess the word. They love it!
