Grading Woes
By sue d.

Clip to ScrapBook
After 8 years, I still have the guilty feeling every Friday when I can't send home "enough" graded papers. This year though, I have tried to come to terms with this by realizing a few things:
1) I grade and send home
all math and spelling tests, quizzes and important curriculum worksheets.
2) The homework... well, I FINALLY began to fit grading it as a class into my schedule and I couldn't be happier.
3) Writing and literature-related work are kept in portfolios, available for parent review by request.

Portfolios for writing and novel work can be assessed by the students, on a self-evaluation

form that can be stapled to the final draft. To review the work myself, I can procrastinate for a while, then take home one or two every few days until the job gets done. Stickie notes help and the kids have fun reading the comments and suggestions. I circle spelling mistakes (but there really shouldn't be many on final drafts of writing pieces).

As a previous poster suggested, some work, while valuable at the time given, is simply not going to be missed by the children and can be thrown away. Keep anecdotal notes on children who need help or struggled with the assignment.
