Ellie, that is a good idea to try and she could also try adding a positive spin to it by allowing the students to earn the letters in the word instead of taking letters away. I have found this to be motivating to the students. Just draw the spaces of the words on the board and randomly write a letter in if you see the class is doing something on task. (easier chances for letters in the beginning, and more frequent).
