Everyday Math
By Denise

Clip to ScrapBook
You are not crazy!!! Everyday Math is a spiral curriculum. I experienced the same frustration you are when I tried to teach the stuff to fourth graders who had not had EM in the previous grades. It sounds like what your
district did was emplement the program district wide instead of starting with one grade level. I say that because EM builds on the previous lessons. I too had students who were struggling with basic concepts. I found the page of Math Boxes helpful.
Work in groups and play the games to help with basic skills. I really don't think the children learned from EM. We also had a set number
of lessons to complete each week in a 90 minute time frame. Honestly, do what you have to do to keep to your schedule. But find a way to give the kids the skills they will need for life. Think, will they ever be asked to compute the peremeter of a square? But they will need to know how to add, subtract, multiply and divide. I hope it helps knowing there are others who feel your pain.
