disrespectful students
By Carolyn

Clip to ScrapBook
Like me, you are a female teacher who is teaching fifth grade. I find that the boys in my classroom are more disrespectful than the girls. In some ways, your boy might actually be "typical." With my boys, I think it's sort
of a macho thing. They can't let the "little woman" tell them how to do things. They challenge me for everything.

You mention that the parents stand firm against counseling. Does that mean that they won't consent to a visit with the guidance counselor at your school? I am sure that she could work with you without their permission to come up with a plan that will help this boy.

I don't think the parents can stop interventions at the school level. Whenever I have trouble with my boys, I send them to her and she has a chat with them. Sometimes it's a good way to give them some time-out when they are getting rude and ugly, and they get to hear from another adult that their behavior isn't appropriate, and they discuss ways as to how they should fix it.
