bad group By Avery

Kelly has many good points. You must be tougher than they are. You may have to talk to your principal. Somewhere online I found an idea about shutting the room down--literally. They came in and sat and did nothing---NOTHING.| No talking, no bathroom, no fun, no learning, just sat. This teacher had to do it for two weeks, but she was able to get her group under control. It will be hard for you to sit there and watch them, but they do need to know that YOU are in charge and you have the ability to make life unfun (bad grammar but appropriate). I also have a number one rule that I got from a Behavior | | Disorder Teacher who worked at a Psychoed Center here in Georgia--where the really problem children go for intensive remediation. Number one rule--I WILL DO AS ANY ADULT TELLS ME TO DO IMMEDIATELY! I explain no one at the school will endanger you, it is not open for discussion and if you don't like it--comply. Writing that rule has made believers out of some of the "Hard case" students I have had in my 25 years. That rule also involves getting a parent signature. I would advise you to get an "official" signature before you begin so that you can avoid the "cousin, neighbor, best friend signs it to keep me out of trouble" syndrom. I am also available to email if you need someone to vent to. You are lucky to have a supportive administration--utilize them. No one gets bored quicker than 5th graders and when there is nothing to do but sit or write the stupid rule (that's what they say) over and over all day--suddenly even Social Studies definitions are intensely interesting. Keep your chin up--you will survive this and be a better teacher for it.
