I know what you mean. I probably would have started by writting names on the board. Then if that wouldn't work I would have sent the worst one of the bunch to the office. That way they would know you mean business.

Another
idea, is you might develop coupons to the ones doing well during the day. Give them a "prize" to work towards so they can behave. The one with the most coupons could pick out of a "prize box." Sometimes bribery works. If not a prize box, then maybe make up some "good behavior" certificates to the good kids.

Still another idea, is the silent treatment. You tell them that they

can't talk or nothing for x amount of time (to be determined by you). I always tell them, "Hey I can just sit here and do nothing until you are done." They get quiet and then they will work.

I think you probably told the teacher in your letter about the behavior problems, and hopefully the regular teacher will "get down" on them. Maybe then the next time when you sub this class it will be better.
