follow a pattern

There is an established pattern to the prayers of the faithful which I learned when I had to write the petitions for my mother's funeral Mass. Using that pattern and putting the kids to thinking seriously yields heartfelt and well tought out petitions.

You start with the larger picture and move to the more specific. With that in mind, the petitions are arranged in this order: the universal church, the world, the nation, the community. I don't know what grade you teach, but set your students to thinking about seasonal aspects of each of these, or current events and needs, and build your petitions from there.
