I thinkyou're on the right track By pjm

it sounds like she is still in the reading to decode stage and is not actually reading for meaning. If she were reading for meaning she'd realize that she was skipping lines.....I think you're on the right track teaching | her stragegies. This year I have begun using Saxon Phonics....which is pure phonics and skills....and I can't believe the difference in my kids decoding skills. It's amazing. I'd really encourage the book mark for reading. Maybe you could laminate something in her favorite color and let her earn stickers during reading to cover it with...maybe that would motivate her to use it | | for reading. Like every time she tries to sound out a word instead of guessin give her a sticker.Does she know all her short vowel sounds? How about long? I'd do some informal testing to see what she really knows. What level is she at in sight words? When she comes to an unknown word how is she guessing by using only the first letter or two, by using the beginning and ending of the word but skipping the middle, does she guess a word that starts with a letter other than what the word actually begins with? Analyze what she's doing when she guesses and that will help you to figure out what skills she is still needing to learn. I'd make a list of what she is able and unable to do and then I'd get to talking to members of your staff about her. Do you feel she is low enough to refer her for special ed services or the reading or chapter/title teacher? does your school have a special team that you bring up the students you are worried about? Have you talked to the special ed teacher or the reading consultant and asked them for stragegies or supplemental materials that you could make copies of or even have?
I hope this helps you a little....if you have more questions post again...
