Do you have the class by yourself right from the start? I'd discuss with your associate teacher how you'd like s/he to introduce you- if it comes from a colleague, you will be more quickly accepted, I think (with junior or intermediate students at least).

Telling them why you're there and that you're pleased to be there (and why), that you have the same expectations as the classroom teacher would be useful and appropriate. Doing some little "getting to know you" activity would show your interest in them. I made it my one goal for the day to learn all their names and they would test me at the end of the day.
