Social Studies Fun

I used my social studies text for a month my first year of teaching. I was dozing along with the kids. Now I teach ss with thematic units and centers. There are books with map skills games. I use Time magazine for kids. I assign projects. We use relief maps. I also throw in a lot of nonfiction books. My kids love ss and they have always scored well on standardized tests. The books are stale and only serve to make kids and teachers dread ss time. Don't give up, it can be done.
