I also read There's A Boy In The Girl's Bathroom to my kids. They really enjoy that one! The main character in the story has many "issues" and I think the kids can relate to him. To teach main idea/details, I read Sarah Plain and Tall. Since none of the chapters have titles, we read the chapter and then come up with a title for that chapter. It helps them understand the main idea concept. Also, it's a movie - so you can enjoy that after reading the book. Maybe do a comparison of the two. Hope this helps you!
