Clip to ScrapBook
WIth all the crazy academic stuff kids are learning in preschool, i find they come to K and first grade without understanding body boundaries and lack attention. I tape bubbles on the floor for the kids to sit inside (make
a circle with tape). I tell a story about being trapped in side of a bubble. This seems to help initially. I try to give the ones who are having a hard time something to do. FOr example, If I am reading a story, I made story cubes and have some of the kids find the characters in the story on the cubes. They love that. I might even give plastic characters and let them act out the
story. I am a puppet teller and I am very animated when I speak to them during circle time. That seems to spark their attention. I also begin circle time with something crazy sometimes if I notice they are off the wall that day. For example, once when the kids were on the carpet, I turned off the light, slammed a book on the floor and said - and then the thunder came crashing down. and began a story about a rain storm. Good luck! The first year is always tough. Hang in there, be creative, and the let the best of you shine through.
