Harriet Tubman unit
By martha

Clip to ScrapBook
I'm planning to do biography units throughout Feb. on famous Americans with my second grade students (I teach ESL). I found a really good unit that was created by a couple of teachers from New York http://www2.lhric.org/pocantico
Click on the "Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad" link. Their unit includes a timeline, poems (using who, what, where, when, why, how), map making, writing summaries (descriptive), and student-created wordsearches. I'm planning on using some of their ideas and adding some graphic organizers to help with vocabulary and story
elements (like character analysis, cause/effect,etc.) Their ideas could easily be formatted for other biographies (i.e. Lincoln, Washington, Kennedy, MLK, Rosa Parks, George Washington Carver etc. etc.)
They have quite an extensive list of other units on their sight, also, that are worth a look for ideas.
