does he try hard? Neat? wanting to learn? is a good friend? always helpful? wants to please? eager to share about his life? there's a lot of good you can say about a child without saying that they are making good progress.

as for the slow progress - John is making very slow progress in all areas and I am very concerned about his lack of achievement. I would like to meet with you and our principal to discuss how we can make John more successful in school. I would really limit it to what I said and make sure the principal is available to help with a plan.
