I am speaking only for third grade. Yes, I have a rug area. At this area I have the following set up....I have this area in front of a chalk board(that I use to hang charts with fun magnets, and write words of the day---I | don't use the chalk board for writing much because I feel the dust is not healthy). I have a School Pledge we say everyday, a quote for the day, etc. I have a dry erase easel that houses Big Books in the back and a tray in the front to use the Big Books, large maps, posters, etc. Plus I write things for review on the dry erase(it is about 48" tall and 24 " wide. I have fun pointers | | (big fluffy duster, magic wand, sparkly flag pointer, etc.) I pick a few students a day to share anything they want but they can't talk unless they are given a wand.I have books pertaining to things we are studying, a TFK Almanac that we find fun facts for the day, etc. We don't spend a lot of time in this area--just about 20 min. in the mornings to get the day off on a good note. We don't go over everything everyday. I just pick a few things to cover in this time. Also, I have them doing a Morning Workshop where they have to Read the Room or Write the Room for part of it. I might give them a question where they have to go to this area to find the answer. I hope this is what you are looking for. I also have a Book Nook where students can sit in bean bags and read.
