We start each day with silent free choice reading in 3rd grade after homework is out on the desk. During this time I go around and listen to some kids read a bit and collect homework. It gives me an opportunity to compliment nice work, give a mini-lesson for mistakes, answer any questions, and discover any missing work. Those whose work is missing do it at recesses until it is finished. It works best for me to follow up right away.
