First grade science fair project
By Marilyn B.

Clip to ScrapBook
How about a garbage pizza? This is an art/recycling activity that teaches kids the composition of American landfills. The pizza is divided according to the percentages of various trash that Americans throw away each day.

After you make the paper mache base, you add toppings in the form of trash. You'll find the activity at The Imagination Factory, but the specific URL address for the pizza activity is http://www.kid-at-art.com/htdoc/lesson59.html. For a class project, you could make a giant pizza!
Be sure to see the Education Department

for a discussion of landfills.

The Imagination Factory integrates art with science and social studies to teach solid waste management concepts in a fun and entertaining way. In addition to the garbage pizza, there are dozens of other activities that you can try. Another group activity that would work is "America the Beautiful?" You'll find that one under Collage. Have fun!
