what happens to old teachers?

Age related discrimination is illegal, but it does exist, even if you can't "prove it." The same problem exists in the nursing profession (I am an RN who is wanting to enter teaching as a second career). Though I am still
in my 30s, I have read countless complaints by "older" re-entry RNs trying to get back into acute care nursing.Currently, there's a huge nursing shortage. You would think it would be easy for these experienced older RNs to find work. Not so.

The experienced RNs tell a story about how they apply for jobs at hospitals that seem eager for new employees, but always get the cold shoulder,

despite supposed need for staff.

Why are experienced employess in nursing & teaching being overlooked? The bottom line is less experienced staff are paid less. After applying at several positions, you start to get the picture. If employers can fill a position with a staff member that costs less, they will jump over backwards to do so. Teaching and nursing are run like cutthroat businesses. It all boils down to the dollar. How sad.

I think experience is worth it's weight in gold. But the bean counters see it otherwise.

Sorry to hear of your experience! I hope you can find a position. It sounds like you have the heart & experience to do a great job. Good luck!
