3/4
By Jennie

Clip to ScrapBook
Michele,
I am in the same situation, teaching a 3/4 split. I have had it one year before, however my numbers the previous year were much lower and I had higher level kids. This year I have some of the lowest third graders
and some of the highest fourth graders. Go figure! Anyway, I do use the basal reader with each respective grade level. We do literature circles where grades are intermixed and I do some whole class novels. I also incorporate literature into math, writing and everything else I possibly can! It's difficult, but I feel as though I have to provide exposure to grade level material for both
grades. Fortunately I have a student teacher right now who is really strong, and she is working with the fourth graders in reading. I also have an assitant two days a week, which helps a lot in scheduling reading conferences and assessments. E-mail me and I'll send you a list of some of the books I use for literature circles, math and writing instruction, and read-alouds. Combinations aren't always easy, but obviously your principal believes you can handle it, or else you wouldn't be in this position!

Hang in there!
Jennie
